The Coal Creek Building

The log portion of this building was the original Malensek Barn, that was located where the Crested Butte Mountain Resort Base Area is now.  The barn was moved by architect Jim Kuziak, who shortly after the move, he added an second story to the building.
This building was moved from the Malensek Ranch to this site.  
Matt Malensek settled in Crested Butte in 1888, arriving
from Semic, Slovenia He and his father took out adjoining homesteads on Crested Butte Mountain in 1901.  MsaLensek'
father eventually returned to Slovenia, but Matt Malensek stayed.  The family is listed in the 1920 US Census: Matt
Malensek, 57 years old; Mary, 54years old; and four of eleven children living at home: John, Matt J. Louis, and Agnes.
Sons Matt and Rudy stayed in Crested Butte and enlarged the ranch.  Matt, born in 1901, married Anne Mihelich.  Rudy
married Asnne' sister, Margaret.  In 1958, the Malenseks sold their ranch to ski area developers . In the late 1970s, the
building was moved to this site, re-modeled, and converted to commercial use
